Alpha Chapter and Camp Good Days and Special Times
The Alpha Chapter of Gamma Phi Beta's local philanthropy is the male school spirit competition, Mr. SU, from which proceeds benefit Camp Good Days and Special Times. Camp Good Days and Special Times, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and families whose lives have been touched by cancer and other life challenges.
The Mr. SU competition is partitioned into four categories: "Dress for Success;" Talent; "Show Your Orange Pride;" and Syracuse University Trivia. Any Syracuse University male who belongs to a recognized student organization is eligible to win.
On December 2, 2006, Gamma Phi Beta's Alpha Chapter hosted the first annual Mr. SU school spirit competition. Moe's Southwest Grill sponsored prizes for the competition. The first place winner received a $500 party for their organization catered by Moe's. Second place received a $250 party by Moe's. All participating judges received $100 gift certificates from Moe's.
In addition to raising money for the organization through Mr. SU, Gamma Phi Beta sisters also interact with Camp Good Days and Special Times to host an annual Halloween and Easter parties.
Additional Philanthropic Activities
Gamma Phi Beta also pairs with Avon to sell their products and raise money for breast cancer research. We call it, "Gamma Phi Kisses Goodbye to Breast Cancer." We figure that while we are raising money for research, we might as well learn as much as we can about the latest health and beauty tips through our friends at Avon.
The Gamma Phi Beta sisters of Syracuse University make a point to participate in every Greek philanthropic activity possible. For example, each year we participate in AXP Powderpuff Football, Tri-delt Pancake Breakfast, Theta Bowl, DKE Volleyball, and Sig Ep Dodgeball. We also reach out to the Syracuse Community with our individual service. Each Alpha sister completes at least 5 hours of community service each semester. We are seen at almost every walk/run to raise money for research. We have also partaken in Syracuse University's Relay for Life to support the American Cancer Society every year. The event rises over $155,000 to be donated towards cancer research.
