  About Us
The Alpha Chapter

The Gamma Phi Beta Sorority was founded at Syracuse University. This means that we, at Syracuse, are the Alpha chapter of our sorority. We are the first. And, while many special gifts accompany being Alpha, we hold much responsibility in upholding the highest ideals of our order. In everything we do, we try to uphold the values established by our founders over 130 years ago. We are honored and welcome the responsibility with being Alpha Chapter of Gamma Phi Beta.

It was at Syracuse University where we held our first chapter meetings in Dr. J.J. Brown's study. It was at Syracuse where Dr. Frank Smalley coined the term "sorority" for Gamma Phi Beta. We walk around campus and our presence is felt everywhere. Frances E. Haven's father was chancellor of the university. The residence hall directly behind our chapter house is named after him. Inside of the Hall of Languages is a plaque which recognizes the many contributions of Gamma Phi Beta to our University. And, if you ever want to go ice skating, Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion (as in Marilyn Tennity - Alpha'42) is where you should go.

Syracuse University is home to three Alpha Chapters of Panhellenic sororities. Alpha Phi, Gamma Phi Beta, and Alpha Gamma Delta, together, are known as the Syracuse Triad. We are privileged to bear the title of Alpha. Our house is welcome to all of our sisters at other chapters who might want to visit the Alpha Chapter of our sorority. We might even give you a tour of the campus. So, stop by, and see for yourself why being a sister of the Alpha chapter of Gamma Phi Beta is so great.
